Transition To The Junior School

We aim to make the transition to junior school as smooth as possible and have a programme arranged with West Byfleet Junior School.

Pupils in Year 2 visit the junior school for assemblies and playtimes in the second half of the summer term. Year 3 teachers spend time observing their new pupils in the infant school and discussing their progress; academic and personal, with Year 2 teachers. Year 2 children spend a whole day near the end of the summer term visiting their new classroom and teacher. Pupils with Special Educational Needs may be particularly anxious about the move to junior school and special arrangements may need to be made for them to visit the junior school depending on individual needs. This may also apply to children who are transferring to other local junior schools.

A very popular buddy system is in place between Year 5 and Year 2 pupils, which involves meeting weekly for the second half of the summer term. The Year 2 children get to know their buddy in Year 5 who will look after them when they start at junior school.

The Headteachers of both the infant and junior schools present an information evening for parents in the summer term to discuss transition.
